Transportation Sector, Indonesia's Largest Energy Consumer in 2020

Energy is crucial for Indonesia's economic activities, both for production and consumption across various sectors. The transportation sector accounts for the largest energy consumption in Indonesia.

According to a report by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), energy consumption in the transportation sector amounted to 364.44 million Barrels of Oil Equivalent (BOE) in 2020. This represents 43.11% of Indonesia's total final energy consumption (845.15 million BOE, excluding biomass).

However, the proportion of energy consumption in the transportation sector in 2020 decreased compared to the previous year, which was 43.80%. Energy consumption in the transportation sector includes fuel, electricity, and natural gas.

Besides the transportation sector, the industrial sector's energy consumption proportion was recorded at 34.07% in 2020. Energy use in the industrial sector also decreased compared to 2019, which was 36.50%. Other sectors also saw a decrease, from 1.24% to 1.22%.

Meanwhile, energy consumption in the commercial and household sectors increased in 2020. Commercial sector energy consumption rose from 4.68% in 2019 to 4.79% in 2020. Household energy consumption increased from 13.76% in 2019 to 16.80% the following year.

This increase in the proportion of energy consumption in the household sector is in line with the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused people to spend more time at home. This was to avoid the spread of the coronavirus, leading to increased energy consumption, such as household electricity use.
