Coal Dominated Indonesia's Primary Energy Supply in 2020

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recorded that Indonesia's primary energy supply reached 1.44 billion Barrels of Oil Equivalent (BOE) in 2020. Of this amount, coal (including coal and briquettes) dominated the contribution to Indonesia's primary energy supply last year.

The primary energy supply from coal was recorded at 553.92 million BOE. This amount equates to a 38.46% contribution from coal in providing Indonesia's primary energy supply.

Crude oil, including crude oil, petroleum products, and LPG, also made a significant contribution, namely 32.82%. This is natural considering that many power plants still use oil and coal as their energy sources.

Then, for more environmentally friendly energy sources such as gas (including natural gas and LNG) and new renewable energy contributed 17.44% and 11.28%, respectively. Biofuel, including liquid biofuel (biodiesel), contributed 3.85%.

Hydropower contributed 3.16% to the primary energy supply. Other renewable energy contributed 2.11%, geothermal 2.01%, wind power 0.08%, solar power 0.05%, and biogas 0.01%.

For information, energy forms consist of two types: primary energy and final or secondary energy. Primary energy is energy provided by nature and has not undergone further processing, such as crude oil, natural gas, coal, hydropower, and geothermal energy. Final (secondary) energy is a transformed form of primary energy that can be used after undergoing several processes, such as those in oil refineries, LPG refineries, power plants, and city gas.
