Survey Indicator: Residents Assess Fuel Subsidy Disbursement as Inaccurate

The majority of the public views the government's direct cash assistance (BLT) in response to the increase in fuel prices as not targeted effectively. This is based on the latest survey results from Indikator Politik Indonesia on October 2, 2022.

59.8% of respondents considered the cash assistance as inadequate compensation for the impact of the fuel price hike. 37.6% stated that the BLT was effectively targeted. Meanwhile, only 2.6% did not answer or did not know.

The survey also showed that a majority of respondents claimed to be entitled to receive BLT from the government following the fuel price increase, while 27% responded that they were not entitled.

Burhanuddin Muhtadi, Executive Director of Indikator Politik, stated that there are several urgent demands from the public to the government as a result of the fuel price increase. The majority, or 29.5% of the public, requested a reduction in the price of basic food commodities; 26.7% requested social assistance for the poor (basic necessities, scholarships, and others); 10% requested a minimum wage increase; and 7.4% requested job creation.

Furthermore, approximately 5.7% requested the disbursement of direct cash assistance; 5.1% requested affordable education for all; and 3.5% requested additional grants or assistance for villages/sub-districts.

The survey was conducted from September 13-20, 2022, using a face-to-face interview method with a sample size of 1,220 people.
