The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) released data showing that the open unemployment rate (OUR) in Malang Regency reached 5.7% in 2023. This figure is a decrease of 0.87% compared to December 2022, which recorded 6.57%. However, compared to December 2021, the figure increased by 0.3%.
Over the past ten years, the open unemployment rate (OUR) has shown an upward trend. However, the Covid-19 pandemic, which began in March 2020, caused the open unemployment rate (OUR) to rise in Malang Regency.
Compared to other regencies/cities, the open unemployment rate (OUR) in this regency/city ranks 117th nationally. The national average open unemployment rate (OUR) in 2023 was 4.6%.
The reduction in the open unemployment rate (OUR) this year can be seen from the conditions of the number of the workforce and the number of employed people. The number of the workforce in Malang Regency has increased over the past three years. Historically, in 2021, there were 1.43 million workers; in 2022, this increased to 1.48 million workers; and in 2023, it was recorded as 1.52 million workers.
As for the number of employed people, the number of workers in Malang Regency has increased over the past three years. Historically, in 2021, there were 1.35 million workers; in 2022, this increased to 1.38 million workers; and in 2023, it was recorded as 1.43 million workers.
The decrease in the open unemployment rate (OUR) in Malang Regency is not directly related to the slump in economic growth in 2023. The economy in this region in 2023 was recorded at five percent. Previously, in 2022, economic growth in this regency/city was recorded at 5.13 percent.
