The Batu Bara Regency's open unemployment rate (OUR) reached 5.88% in 2023, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). This figure is a 0.33% decrease compared to December 2022 (6.21%) and a 0.74% decrease compared to December 2021. Since 2018, the OUR in Batu Bara Regency has shown an increasing trend in terms of numbers. However, in the four years since the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 onwards), the OUR has decreased.
Compared to other regencies/cities nationwide, Batu Bara Regency ranks 114th in terms of OUR. The national average OUR in 2023 was 4.3%.
This decrease in the OUR is reflected in the number of employed people and the labor force, as published by BPS this year. The labor force in Batu Bara Regency has decreased over the past three years. Historically, there were 214,290 workers in 2021, increasing to 228,070 in 2022, and decreasing to 224,740 in 2023.
Regarding the number of employed people, Batu Bara Regency has seen an increasing trend over the past 13 years. In the four years since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of employed people has also shown an upward trend. In 2021, there were 200,110 employed individuals; this number decreased by 2,376 to 211,540 in 2023.
The decrease in the OUR in Batu Bara Regency is not directly related to the region's economic growth, which also continued to increase in 2023, reaching 4.08%. In 2022, economic growth was recorded at 4.07%.
