Presidential candidate number 3, Ganjar Pranowo, discussed the problems faced by Indonesian migrant workers. He addressed this during the fifth Presidential Election debate of 2024, themed Social Welfare, Culture, Education, Information Technology, Health, Employment, Human Resources, and Inclusion, held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

In a question-and-answer session, the moderator asked Ganjar about his strategy for ensuring the safety of Indonesian migrant workers.

Ganjar responded that state agencies such as the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI), the Ministry of Manpower, and local governments play a role in guaranteeing the safety of this group of workers.

"The problems they (migrant workers) face, starting from their departure, their legality must be in order. From their departure, we must already know their skills, what's in the work contract, we ensure everything," said Ganjar.

"Control must be carried out by the existing ministries and institutions to protect all Indonesian citizens and all those under its jurisdiction wherever they are," he added.

According to BP2MI data, there were 1,999 complaints from Indonesian migrant workers throughout 2023.

The most frequent cases involved Indonesian migrant workers wanting to return home (521 complaints).

Then there were 318 complaints related to migrant workers failing to depart, 201 complaints regarding placement fees exceeding the cost structure, and 121 complaints related to job scams.
