According to a survey by the Institute for Demographic and Poverty Studies (IDEAS), many online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers in Jabodetabek work more than eight hours a day.

Of the 225 ojol respondents surveyed in April–May 2023, the majority, or 28.4%, worked approximately 13–14 hours/day.

A significant number also worked 11–12 hours/day, while those working 7–8 hours/day were proportionally fewer, as shown in the graph.

In total, in 2023, 68.9% of ojol respondents in Jabodetabek reported working between 9–16 hours per day.

Furthermore, 58.7% of respondents were estimated to work between 61–112 hours per week, exceeding the normal working hours of approximately 40–60 hours per week.

This long working duration for ojol drivers is not in line with their welfare. For example, the average working time for ojol drivers in Bekasi City is 11.5 hours per day. However, their average gross income in 2023 was only Rp3.9 million per month.

After deducting operational costs, including fuel, food, and phone credit, the average net monthly income for ojol drivers in Bekasi City was Rp2.6 million per month, only half of the minimum city wage, which was Rp5 million per month at that time.

These inadequate working conditions prompted ojol communities in Java and Sumatra to demonstrate on Tuesday (20/5/2025). One of their demands was regarding employment status.

Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that he had received aspirations from driver partners. He also received reports on three main issues highlighted by ojol drivers: fares, employment status, and a discount reduction to 10% from the previous maximum of 20%.
