1,358 Complaints Filed by Indonesian Migrant Workers Until November 2024: Here's the Trend

According to a report by the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI), there were 1,358 complaints from Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) between January and November 2024.

The number of complaints has fluctuated over the past year. The highest number of complaints was recorded in May 2024, reaching 226 cases. The lowest number of complaints was received in February 2024, with 81 cases.

In November 2024, there were 96 new complaints from PMIs. Of these, only 6.25% have been resolved, while 93.75% are still in process.

Based on the type of case, the most frequently reported complaint to BP2MI in November was migrant workers wishing to be repatriated, with 22 cases.

This was followed by 15 cases of PMIs failing to depart, 12 cases related to PMI social security, and 7 cases of PMIs dying in their destination countries.

BP2MI also recorded that complaints in the previous month originated mostly from Taiwan, with a total of 21 cases. This was followed by Malaysia with 15 cases, Saudi Arabia with 9 cases, and South Korea with 5 cases.

Furthermore, the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Ministry (KP2MI) recently formed a Rapid Response Team for Indonesian Migrant Protection to eradicate syndicates trafficking illegal PMIs.

Minister of PM2I, Abdul Kadir Karding, stated that there were 4.3 million illegal migrant workers in 2017. The departure of these illegal PMIs was detected at airports, ports, and other locations.

"These 'unprocedural' (migrant workers) are vulnerable to exploitation, human trafficking, and TPPO," said Karding in his statement, as reported by Antara on Friday, December 6, 2024.

This team comprises members from the Ministry of P2MI and the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Centers (BP3MI) spread across 13 provinces that send a large number of migrant workers.
