Indramayu Regency: The District with the Highest Number of Indonesian Migrant Workers in 2023

Based on a report by the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI), the number of Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs) in 2023 totaled 274,965.

Indramayu Regency was the origin of the highest number of IMWs, with 19,178 individuals, representing 6.97% of the total IMWs in 2023.

East Lombok was second with 13,111 IMWs. This was followed by Cilacap and Central Lombok, with 11,344 and 10,840 IMWs respectively.

Conversely, Cianjur Regency had the lowest number of IMWs last year, with only 1,597 individuals. This was followed by Ngawi Regency and Majalengka Regency, with 2,556 and 2,819 IMWs respectively.

The following is a list of the top 10 regencies of origin for Indonesian migrant workers in 2023:

1. Indramayu: 19,178 people
2. East Lombok: 13,111 people
3. Cilacap: 11,344 people
4. Central Lombok: 10,840 people
5. Cirebon: 10,552 people
6. Ponorogo: 9,180 people
7. Blitar: 8,634 people
8. East Lampung: 8,031 people
9. Malang: 7,447 people
10. Tulungagung: 7,141 people

By province, the majority of IMWs originated from East Java, with 68,069 individuals or 24.75% of the total IMWs last year.

Central Java was second with 59,009 IMWs, followed by West Java and West Nusa Tenggara with 52,961 and 33,949 IMWs respectively.

Throughout 2023, the majority of IMWs were deployed to Taiwan, totaling 83,216 individuals. This represents 30.26% of the total Indonesian migrant worker population last year.

The next largest destination country for IMWs was Malaysia, which employed 72,260 IMWs. This was followed by Hong Kong with 65,916 and South Korea with 12,580.

In terms of profession, IMWs were predominantly employed as domestic helpers last year, totaling 66,362 individuals. This was followed by caregivers with 54,665 and plantation workers with 25,163.
