High School Education Costs in Jakarta are the Highest Nationally, While West Sulawesi's are the Lowest

The 2018 Supporting Education Statistics report shows that the cost of Senior High School (SMA) or equivalent education in Jakarta reached Rp 13.44 million in the 2017/2018 academic year. This figure is the highest compared to other provinces in Indonesia.

Four out of five other provinces on Java Island also have SMA education costs above the national average of Rp 6.53 million. Specifically, the cost of SMA education in West Java was Rp 8.73 million, Banten Rp 8.16 million, Yogyakarta Rp 8.02 million, and East Java Rp 6.93 million.

Meanwhile, the cost of SMA education in Central Java was below the national average. Parents in that province spent up to Rp 6.34 million on SMA education in the 2017/2018 academic year.

The total cost of education for these students comprises several fees paid to the school, ranging from registration fees and educational development contributions to student worksheets. Furthermore, the cost also includes stationery and supplies, practical work and its supporting materials, school courses, evaluations/exams, pocket money, transportation costs, and other expenses.

Each educational institution sets different prices. The average cost of education at public schools was Rp 5.33 million, while private schools reached Rp 8.83 million in the 2017/2018 academic year.
