World's Best Universities Implementing SGD: Are There Any from Indonesia?

The 2022 Impact Rankings released by Times Higher Education (THE) list the world's best universities, encompassing 1,406 universities from 106 countries/regions.

The ranking is based on the success rate of higher education institutions in implementing 17 categories of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in four areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

Each university is assessed based on different SDGs, depending on its focus. Each campus submits data on SDG-17 and at least 3 other SDG categories to be included in the overall ranking.

SDG-17 is weighted at 22%, and the other 3 SDGs are each weighted at 26%. The scores from each SDG are scaled so that the highest score on each SDG in the overall calculation is 100.

Here are the top 10 universities in the world according to The Impact Rankings 2022:

2. Arizona State University (Tempe), United States
3. Western University, Canada
4. King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia
5. Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia
6. University of Auckland, New Zealand
7. Queen's University, Canada
8. Newcastle University, United Kingdom
9. University of Manchester, United Kingdom
10. Hokkaido University, Japan

An Indonesian university is included in this ranking, although not in the top 10. Universitas Indonesia (UI) ranks 18th overall, with a score of 95.1.

THE measures UI's performance as a higher education institution that impacts a number of Sustainable Development Goals, with the best global score based on SDG 5 – Gender Equality, with a score of 81.

Then SDG 1 – No Poverty, with a score of 88.4, SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation with a score of 85.2, and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals with an overall score of 92.4.
