Visits to the National Library Continue to Decline until 2024

According to data from the National Library (Perpusnas), from the beginning of this year until October 3, 2025, there have been 261,336 visits to the library.

This number is down by 4.42% or approximately 12 thousand visits from 2024, which recorded 273,423 visits. This achievement is the lowest in the last nine years.

In terms of trend, the number of public visits to Perpusnas has indeed tended to decrease. The highest level was reached in 2017 with 593,167 visits, followed by a continuous decline in subsequent years.

Additionally, Perpusnas noted that there are 229,452 library units spread across all regions of Indonesia.

For information, Perpusnas' operating hours are Monday-Friday from 08:00-19:00 WIB and Saturday-Sunday from 09:00-16:00 WIB. It is closed on national holidays and collective leave days.

These operating hours are not much different from those implemented by the Jakarta Library at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), which are from 09:00-22:00 WIB. The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has indeed devised a strategy for this 'literacy tourism' spot to attract more visitors and accommodate the needs of Jakarta residents. This is because not many libraries can stay open until late at night.

"We will implement this soon because it is part of providing education and opportunities for children in need," said Pramono in his statement, as reported by Antara, Friday (May 16, 2025).
