Percentage of Scholarship Recipients in Indonesia Tends to Rise until 2024

Based on Indonesian Government Regulation No. 48 of 2008 concerning Education Funding, the central and regional governments are obligated to allocate funds to assist impoverished communities in accessing education.

Educational assistance or scholarships are provided to high-achieving students or those whose parents cannot afford their education.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported in its latest data from 2024 that 24.53% of students in Indonesia received scholarships.

"These scholarships/educational financial assistance cover some or all of the educational costs borne by the student, including personal expenses," wrote BPS in its 2024 Supporting Education Statistics report.

The trend shows that the percentage of students receiving scholarships has generally increased since 2012, in three-year intervals. However, it experienced a decline in 2015 and 2021, as shown in the graph.

By type, the Indonesia Pintar Program (PIP) is the most widely received scholarship, reaching 86.90%.

PIP is a government-provided assistance program in the form of cash, expanded access, and learning opportunities for students and university students from impoverished families.

Next, 7.43% of scholarship recipients received assistance from regional governments (pemda).

Furthermore, 4.01% received scholarships from the central government, 1.76% from non-governmental organizations, and 2.07% from other sources.
