10 Indonesian Provinces with the Highest Tuition Fees for the 2023/2024 Academic Year

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the average total cost of higher education in Indonesia during the 2023/2024 academic year reached Rp19.01 million.

This figure is almost double the average total cost of senior high school (SMA/SMK/equivalent) education, which is around Rp10.19 million.

Considering the provinces, the highest average total tuition fee is in Banten.

Here is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest average total tuition fees in Indonesia during the 2023/2024 academic year, according to BPS data:

1. Banten: Rp31.27 million
2. Jakarta: Rp28.55 million
3. North Sulawesi: Rp23.62 million
4. Riau Islands: Rp22.89 million
5. West Java: Rp21.21 million
6. East Kalimantan: Rp20.26 million
7. Central Papua: Rp19.32 million
8. Yogyakarta Special Region: Rp18.71 million
9. North Sumatra: Rp18.36 million
10. East Java: Rp18.21 million

The total costs recorded here are the accumulation of registration fees, pocket money, transportation costs, and educational operational costs.

Operational costs include educational development contributions or single tuition fees (SPP/UKT), school uniforms and equipment, textbooks, stationery, and other expenses incurred by students.

"At the higher education level, besides pocket money, SPP/UKT fees also account for one-third of the total education costs," said BPS in its 2024 Education Support Statistics report.

"The SPP/UKT cost component for higher education is 33.47% of the total higher education cost, almost five times the SPP/UKT cost for senior high school (SMA/SMK equivalent)," they said.
