Proportion of Early Childhood Children in 38 Indonesian Provinces 2024

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), as of March 2024, approximately 1 in 10—precisely 10.82%—of Indonesia's population consisted of early childhood (aged 0-6 years).

"Provinces with the largest proportion of early childhood are dominated by provinces in eastern Indonesia," wrote the BPS in its *Early Childhood Profile 2024* report.

This year, South Papua had the highest proportion of early childhood, reaching 15.17%. It was followed by East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) with 13.53% and West Papua with 12.96%.

Meanwhile, the Central Highlands of Papua had the lowest proportion of early childhood, at only 7.06%. This was followed by Central Papua at 8.22% and Yogyakarta Special Region at 9.42%.

Below is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest percentage of early childhood population nationally in March 2024:

2. East Nusa Tenggara (NTT): 13.53%
3. West Papua: 12.96%
4. Southeast Sulawesi: 12.85%
5. Riau Islands: 12.82%
6. West Sulawesi: 12.75%
7. Southwest Papua: 12.58%
8. Aceh: 12.57%
9. West Nusa Tenggara: 12.57%
10. Maluku: 12.38%

Based on their developmental age group, early childhood is divided into three groups: infants under 1 year old, children aged 1-4 years, and children aged 5-6 years.

In March 2024, the majority, or 59.9%, of early childhood in Indonesia were aged 1-4 years, 28.99% were aged 5-6 years, and 11.11% were infants under 1 year old.
