2024 School Life Expectancy in 38 Indonesian Provinces: Yogyakarta Highest

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the average expected years of schooling (HLS) in Indonesia reached 13.21 years in 2024.

This means that Indonesian children aged 7 and over have the opportunity to pursue education for 13.21 years until graduating from senior high school/equivalent or Diploma I.

Of the 38 provinces, 21 have an HLS above the national average, while 17 are below the average.

In 2024, Yogyakarta had the highest HLS at 15.7 years. This means that 7-year-old children in this province are expected to pursue education up to the equivalent of a Diploma III level.

The following is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest national HLS in 2024:

1. Yogyakarta: 15.7 years
2. Aceh: 14.39 years
3. West Sumatra: 14.3 years
4. Maluku: 14.09 years
5. East Kalimantan: 14.03 years
6. West Nusa Tenggara (NTB): 13.98 years
7. Southwest Papua: 13.88 years
8. Bengkulu: 13.75 years
9. North Maluku: 13.75 years
10. Papua: 13.72 years

The following are the 10 provinces with the lowest national HLS in 2024:

1. Central Papua: 9.63 years
2. Highland Papua: 9.97 years
3. Bangka Belitung Islands: 12.49 years
4. South Sumatra: 12.64 years
5. South Papua: 12.67 years
6. West Kalimantan: 12.68 years
7. Central Kalimantan: 12.77 years
8. Lampung: 12.78 years
9. West Java: 12.8 years
10. Central Java: 12.86 years

Note that HLS is one of the indicators forming the knowledge dimension in the Human Development Index (HDI). This indicator reflects the access to education obtained by the community.
