As of 2020, 288 higher education institutions were located in Jakarta. This comprises 284 private higher education institutions (PTS) and four public higher education institutions (PTN).

South Jakarta had the highest number of higher education institutions in the capital, with 96 units; 94 PTS and two PTN.

East Jakarta had 87 higher education institutions, including 86 PTS and one PTN. Central Jakarta had 56 higher education institutions, comprising 55 PTS and one PTN.

West Jakarta had 33 higher education institutions, all privately managed. North Jakarta had 16 higher education institutions, also all privately managed. There were no higher education institutions in the Thousand Islands.

Based on data from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek), 11 higher education institutions in Jakarta have achieved A accreditation. 63 institutions have B accreditation, and 48 have C accreditation.

There are 2,026 study programs across all higher education institutions in Jakarta. The number of lecturers teaching in Jakarta is 28,735.

The number of students in Jakarta reached 707,707 last year. Of this number, 102,507 students dropped out.
