In 2020, the average school life expectancy in West Sumatra reached 14.02 years.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) notes that the expected years of schooling (EYS) in West Sumatra has shown an upward trend over the past decade. This is a positive sign that more people in West Sumatra are attending school.

The EYS in West Sumatra was recorded at 12.22 years in 2010. This figure rose to 14.02 years in 2020. This indicates that, on average, a 7-year-old child in West Sumatra has the opportunity to attend school for 14.02 years, or to complete a Diploma II program by last year.

The highest increase in EYS in West Sumatra occurred in 2011, at 0.3 years. Meanwhile, the lowest increase in EYS in the province occurred in 2018 and 2020, at 0.01 years.

In addition to EYS, the average years of schooling (AYS) in West Sumatra has also shown an increasing trend from 2010 to 2020. This growth is an important asset in building a better quality of human resources in Indonesia.

Most recently, the AYS in West Sumatra was 8.99 years in 2020. This means that the average West Sumatran resident aged 25 and over has received 8.99 years of education, or has almost completed the eighth grade.
