Oxford University has been named the world's best university by Times Higher Education. In its September 2016 release, Oxford surpassed the California Institute of Technology, which previously consistently held the top position. Oxford excelled in international outlook and research.
Oxford's success stems from improvements across all assessment indicators. The most rapid changes were seen in the increased impact of research and the university's success in producing talented graduates.

The ranking methodology for the best universities includes five areas: teaching, research, research influence, international outlook, and knowledge transfer. This ranking has been conducted 12 times and audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). In 2016, two universities also entered the top 10: the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago.
Besides Oxford, two Asian universities also rose in the rankings and entered the top 100: the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Furthermore, four other universities entered the top 200: City University of Hong Kong, the University of Science and Technology of China, Fudan University, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
