Firli Bahuri, the Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for the 2019-2023 period, has been named a suspect in an alleged extortion case involving former Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo.
"A case review has been conducted, and sufficient evidence has been found to designate Mr. FB (Firli Bahuri), the Chairman of the KPK, as a suspect," said Ade Safri Simanjuntak, Director of Special Criminal Investigation at the Jakarta Metro Police, as reported by Antara on Thursday, November 23, 2023.
According to Ade, Firli Bahuri is implicated in alleged extortion, gratification, or the receipt of gifts/promises related to his position.
Firli Bahuri is recorded as the wealthiest KPK Chairman in the history of the anti-corruption agency.
Based on the State Officials' Wealth Report (LHKPN) data, until the end of 2022, Firli Bahuri had total assets of Rp22.86 billion.
This figure far surpasses the wealth of previous KPK Chairmen.
The following is a list of the wealth of KPK Chairmen before Firli Bahuri, based on the latest LHKPN data when they held the position:
* Taufiequrachman Ruki (KPK Chairman 2003-2007 and Acting KPK Chairman 2015): Rp10.66 billion in assets
* Antasari Azhar (KPK Chairman 2007-2009): Rp3.34 billion
* M. Busyro Muqoddas (KPK Chairman 2010-2011): Rp2.01 billion
* Abraham Samad (KPK Chairman 2011-2015): Rp3.39 billion
* Agus Rahardjo (KPK Chairman 2015-2019): Rp10.65 billion
Besides Firli Bahuri, there is also one KPK Chairman who was previously involved in a criminal case, namely Antasari Azhar.
In 2009, the court indicted Antasari as the mastermind behind the murder of Nazarudin Zulkarnaen, Director of PT Putra Rajawali Bantaran.
However, the indictment against Antasari was considered unfair.
"From the beginning of the Antasari case handling, there were many irregularities in terms of criminal procedural order, including forcing an innocent person to go to jail. Because the charge of incitement was not actually proven according to the law," said Antasari Azhar's legal team, Boyamin Saiman, as reported by Harian Kompas on Monday, May 11, 2015.
