From 1980 to 2007, many technology companies in the United States (US) conducted initial public offerings (IPOs) with a median company age of less than 10 years.

However, in the last decade, the median age of US technology companies conducting IPOs has tended to increase to 10 years or more.

This was revealed by Jay R. Ritter, an economist and IPO researcher from the University of Florida, US.

Ritter's research shows that current US technology issuers tend to remain private companies for a longer time than they did several decades ago.

In 2011, for example, US technology companies listed on the stock exchange had a median age of 10 years.

In subsequent years, the age of companies going public tended to increase, as shown in the graph, until the median age reached 12 years in 2021.

Yet, towards the end of the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s, the median age of US technology issuers was estimated to be only 4 years.

Then in 2009, after the global financial crisis, the median age of technology issuers is estimated to have surged to 14 years, the highest since Ritter began collecting data in 1980.

Since the beginning of 2022, many US technology company stocks have plummeted. NASDAQ, a US stock exchange containing many technology companies, has recorded an index decline of around 28% year-to-date (YTD) as of May 12, 2022, the worst since the 2008 financial crisis.
