Makassar's 2023 Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current prices reached Rp226.9 trillion. This represents a 5.31% growth compared to the previous year's Rp208.94 trillion.
Compared to the COVID-19 pandemic year of 2020, the region's economic growth is significantly higher. At the end of 2020, post-COVID, growth recorded a decrease of 1.27%.
According to BPS (Statistics Indonesia) publications, with a total population of 1.47 million, the GRDP per capita in the region is recorded at Rp155.95 million/capita/year. Nationally, this ranks 35th.
Of the 17 sectors driving the region's economy, wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles is the leading sector.
In 2023, the wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector in Makassar City recorded a value of Rp45.44 million million. This GRDP ranks first among the 17 sectors. This sector grew by 4.8% compared to the previous year's figure of Rp42 million million.
Second is the manufacturing industry, growing by 3.58% to Rp42.72 million million, followed by the construction sector in third place, growing by 3.06% to Rp41.3 million million.
Other sectors contributing to the top five include education services with a GRDP of Rp18.26 million million.

In terms of distribution, the main sector contributing the most to GRDP growth in Makassar City is wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with a contribution of 20%. Other sectors in the top five are manufacturing, construction, information and communication, and education services.
The sectors with the smallest distribution are Corporate Services, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Water Supply, Waste Management, Waste and Recycling, Electricity and Gas Supply, and Mining and Quarrying.
