Indonesia's GNI per Capita Was the Fourth Highest in Southeast Asia in 2020

Indonesia's Gross National Income (GNI) per capita was recorded at US$3,870 in 2020. This figure was the fourth highest in Southeast Asia, below Singapore (US$54,920), Malaysia (US$10,580), and Thailand (US$7,050).

The Philippines ranked after Indonesia with a GNI per capita of US$3,430. Vietnam and Laos had GNI per capita of US$2,660 and US$2,480 respectively.

Timor Leste had a GNI per capita of US$1,830. Meanwhile, the two countries with the lowest GNI per capita in Southeast Asia were Cambodia and Myanmar, at US$1,490 and US$1,260 respectively.

The GNI per capita of most countries generally decreased in 2020 compared to the previous year due to the impact of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. Only Vietnam experienced an increase of around 2.7%.

Furthermore, based on World Bank classification, the majority of Southeast Asian countries fall into the lower-middle-income category. This is because their GNI per capita is in the range of US$1,046-4,095.

However, Thailand and Malaysia are categorized as upper-middle-income countries because their GNI per capita is in the range of US$4,096-12,695. Singapore, with a GNI per capita above US$12,695, is classified as a high-income country.
