LSI Survey: Public Wants Tin Corruption Perpetrators Impoverished

Of approximately 1,200 people surveyed by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI), 40.1% were aware of the PT Timah corruption case currently under investigation by the Attorney General's Office.

Of those aware of the case, the majority, or 39.9%, believed that the appropriate punishment for the perpetrators was the confiscation of all assets (confiscation of all assets or impoverishment).

Another 26.9% considered life imprisonment to be the appropriate punishment, 8.6% revocation of business licenses, and 2.1% a 20-year prison sentence.

The LSI also recorded that 68.4% of respondents were confident that the Attorney General's Office would thoroughly investigate the tin corruption case, while 28.3% were less or not confident, and 3.3% did not know or did not answer.

This LSI survey involved 1,213 respondents aged 17 and over, assumed to represent 83% of the total national population. Respondents were selected using random digit dialing (RDD).

Data was collected on April 7-9, 2024, through telephone interviews. This survey has a margin of error of approximately 2.9% at a 95% confidence level, assuming random sampling.

Previously, the Attorney General's Office had named 16 suspects in the alleged tin trading corruption case in PT Timah's operational area.

The suspects include Mochtar Roza Pahlevi Tabrani, the President Director of PT Timah from 2016-2021, and Harvey Moeis, the husband of actress Sandra Dewi.

The Attorney General's Office stated that the total estimated ecological damage from this case reached Rp271 trillion.
