The 2022 Asian Games, held in Hangzhou, China, commenced on Saturday, September 23, 2023, and will conclude on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
According to the official Asian Games website, as of 11:20 WIB on Monday, September 25, 2023, Indonesia was ranked within the top 10 in the provisional medal tally. The Indonesian team had secured 4 medals: 1 silver and 3 bronze.
This medal count placed Indonesia 10th in the ranking by medal count, but 7th in the overall ranking based on total medals won.
According to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) Twitter account, the first silver medal was contributed by Edgar Xavier Marvelo in the men's changquan wushu event.
The first bronze medal was won by Chelsea Corputty and Mutia Rahma Putri in the lightweight women's double sculls rowing event.
The second bronze medal was won by Ihram and Memo in the men's double sculls rowing event. The third bronze medal was secured by Asihan Pattiha and his teammates in the men's eight rowing event.
China topped the provisional standings with 43 medals: 27 gold, 11 silver, and 5 bronze.
South Korea was in second place with 17 medals (5 gold, 6 silver, and 6 bronze). Japan was in third place with 18 medals (3 gold, 9 silver, and 6 bronze).
Previously, a contingent of 576 Indonesian athletes was sent off by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, to compete in the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
"Today, we will send off a contingent of 576 people to the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, participating in 30 sports," Jokowi said during the send-off ceremony at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, as reported by the Cabinet Secretariat website.
At the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, the Indonesian contingent finished 4th. Now, Jokowi hopes Indonesia will remain in the top 10 at this largest sporting event in Asia. This target is higher than the Ministry of Youth and Sports' target of 12th place.
"Not 12th, I want to be in the top 10. I know that being the host and not being the host is different, I know. So, my target is to be in the top 10, my calculations usually don't miss," said Jokowi.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Dito Ariotedjo, reported that the Indonesian contingent of 576 people consisted of 413 athletes, 132 officials, and 28 chef de mission (CdM) teams.
