Maruli Simanjuntak, Luhut's Son-in-Law, a Candidate for Army Chief of Staff, Has Assets Worth Rp52 Billion

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will appoint a successor to Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (KSAD) General TNI Agus Subiyanto next week.

According to *Detik.com*, Jokowi has not yet revealed the candidates for KSAD. However, he confirmed that the name of the Commander of the Army Strategic Reserve Command (Pangkostrad) Lieutenant General Maruli Simanjuntak, son-in-law of Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, is on the list of candidates.

"One of the candidates, yes [Maruli]," said Jokowi after attending the peak of the National Teachers' Day event at Indonesia Arena GBK, Senayan, Jakarta, Saturday (25/11/2023).

*Katadata* reported that General TNI Agus Subiyanto, who recently took office as KSAD on Sunday (27/10/2023), will be proposed by Jokowi as the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). Jokowi has submitted the proposal to the DPR to replace Admiral Yudo Margono, who will retire in December 2023.

Maruli himself stated that he is ready if appointed as KSAD. “As a soldier, whether appointed or not, one must continue to work,” said Maruli during a visit to the State Secretariat Ministry's office, as reported on Wednesday (1/11/2023).

Maruli has held the position of Pangkostrad since the beginning of 2022. His military career began after graduating from the Military Academy in 1992. Maruli specializes in infantry.

Based on data from the State Officials' Wealth Report (LHKPN) of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Maruli has assets totaling Rp52.88 billion in the 2022 period, reported on March 31, 2023.

The largest component of Maruli's wealth is cash and cash equivalents amounting to Rp43.39 billion. This is an asset in the form of cash or that can be converted into cash.

The second largest component of Maruli's wealth is land and buildings or houses. Maruli is recorded as owning land and buildings in Bandung (1) and South Jakarta (1). There are also buildings alone in South Jakarta (2).

The 53-year-old senior officer also has securities worth Rp4.38 billion, other movable assets worth Rp2.23 billion, and other assets worth Rp900 million.

Other assets in the form of vehicles are reported at Rp605 million. Maruli owns a 1995 BMW car, a 2021 Toyota Innova Venturer, a 2010 Piaggio motorcycle, and a 2014 Kawasaki motorcycle.

Maruli's total assets reach Rp74.74 billion. However, Maruli is recorded as having debts of Rp21.85 billion. As a result, his net worth in the LHKPN is Rp52.88 billion.
