2016: Japanese Investment in Indonesia Increased by 88 Percent

Japan is one of the largest investors in Indonesia. According to data from the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), foreign investment from Japan in 2016 reached US$5.4 billion, equivalent to Rp71.8 trillion. This was the second largest after investment from China, which reached US$9.78 billion.

Japanese investment in Indonesia in 2016 surged 87.8 percent compared to the previous year. The value of projects also increased by 62.66 percent year-on-year. However, in the first half of 2017, investment from Japan decreased by 1.77 percent to US$2.85 billion compared to US$2.9 billion in the first half of the previous year.

Nevertheless, the number of Japanese investment projects in Indonesia in the first six months of this year increased by more than 30 percent to 2,254 projects, compared to 1,725 projects in the same period the previous year.
