During the first six months of 2022, the prices of various commodities in Indonesia increased. By June 2022, the annual inflation rate in Indonesia had reached 4.35%, the highest in the last five years.
Despite this, it appears that many Indonesians report improved household economic conditions amidst this situation.
According to a recent survey by Indikator Politik, 40.5% of respondents stated that their household economy improved in June 2022. This breaks down to 36.9% reporting a better economy and 3.6% reporting a significantly better economy.
Another 36.1% of respondents assessed their household economy as unchanged.
Meanwhile, 23.4% of respondents felt their economy worsened, with 2.4% reporting a significantly worse economy and 21% reporting a worse economy.
Regarding the national economic condition, 30.5% of respondents considered Indonesia's current economic condition to be bad or very bad, 26% considered it good or very good, and 42.2% considered it moderate.
"Although nationally more people say it's bad, respondents say their household economy is better than last year. Again, there's improvement. Last year was still the pandemic era, the economy was quite badly hit," said Burhanuddin Muhtadi, Executive Director of Indikator Politik, in a virtual press conference on Monday, July 11, 2022.
"So this shows optimism, that post-pandemic economic recovery is showing signs of being on track," Burhanuddin continued.
This survey was conducted by Indikator Politik from June 16-24, 2022. The survey population consisted of 1,200 Indonesian citizens aged 17 years or older, or who were married.
The sample came from all Indonesian provinces, proportionally distributed. Assuming a simple random sampling method, this survey has a margin of error of approximately 2.9% at a 95% confidence level.
