The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) stated that in May 2019, inflation reached 0.68% compared to the previous month, with the consumer price index (CPI) at 137.4. This was the highest inflation rate of the year. Of the 82 cities surveyed, 81 experienced inflation, while only one, Merauke, recorded deflation. May's inflation was the highest in the last three years; for comparison, inflation in May 2018 was 0.21% and in May 2017, 0.39%.
This inflation occurred due to rising prices of goods, indicated by increases across all expenditure group indices. The food commodity group saw a 2.02% increase, followed by the processed food, beverages, tobacco group at 0.56%.
The calendar year inflation rate (January-May) 2019 was 1.48%, higher than the same period in 2018 (1.3%). However, it was lower than the same period in 2017 (1.67%). Year-on-year (YoY) inflation in May 2019 reached 3.32%, higher than May 2018 (3.23%) but lower than May 2017 (4.33%).
