The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) overall experienced inflation of 4.22% (year-on-year/yoy) in April 2022.

The mining and quarrying sector recorded the fastest growth in wholesale price inflation (WPI) during this period, at 8.58% (yoy).

"The main cause is the increase in the WPI in the mining and quarrying sector, particularly in commodities such as salt, coal, and sand," said BPS Head Margo Yuwono in a press conference on Monday (May 9, 2022).

The manufacturing sector also recorded a rapid increase in WPI inflation, at 5.15% (yoy). Inflation in this sector was driven mainly by cooking oil, gasoline, and broiler chicken, according to the BPS Head.

Meanwhile, WPI inflation in the agricultural sector only grew by 0.12% (yoy) in April 2022.

Bank Mandiri economist Faisal Rachman believes that the rate of wholesale price inflation, which is consistently higher than the rate of consumer price inflation, could pose a risk of supply-side inflationary pressure shifting to demand-side pressure.
