Survey Indicator: Economic Factors Cited as Reason for 64.3% of Public Opposing PPKM Extension

The implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) has been in effect since July 3, 2021, and has been repeatedly extended until now. A survey by the Indonesian Political Indicator (IPI) shows that 64.3% of the public either disagree or strongly disagree with further extensions of the PPKM policy. A significant 70.4% cited reduced or lost income as the primary reason for their disapproval.

Furthermore, 15% of respondents stated that their children's education or schooling was disrupted by the Emergency PPKM. Another 8.6% said the policy hampered public mobility, making them feel restricted in their movements.

Some respondents also believed that the Emergency PPKM fostered mutual suspicion among people, fearing each other as potential disease carriers (2.8%). Other reasons included the belief that the Emergency PPKM was unnecessary (1.1%), boring (1%), and other miscellaneous reasons. 0.7% of respondents did not know or did not answer.

Despite the majority's disapproval of extending the Emergency PPKM, a majority believe the policy effectively reduces COVID-19 transmission and mortality rates. These figures stand at 60.3% and 57.2%, respectively.

This survey employed online and telephone interviews with 1,200 randomly selected respondents. Respondents were participants who had previously taken part in IPI surveys between March 2018 and June 2021. Additionally, the sample was randomly selected from all provinces proportionally. The survey's margin of error is 2.9% with a 95% confidence level.
