Ten Indonesian Cities Record Highest Food Inflation in March 2022

Indonesia is experiencing rising prices for food, beverages, and tobacco in various cities.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the consumer price index (CPI) for the food, beverage, and tobacco group (for the food subgroup) in Sibolga City was at 119.17 in March 2022. Therefore, the CPI, food inflation in that city, was 2.31% compared to the previous month (month-to-month/m-to-m).

Compared to December 2021, food inflation in Sibolga City was 5.44% (year-to-date/ytd). Compared to March 2021, food inflation in the city was 10.42% (year-on-year/yoy).

Annually, Sibolga City had the highest food inflation compared to 89 other cities surveyed by BPS, and higher than the national average food subgroup inflation of 3.41% (yoy).

The cities/regions with the next highest food inflation were Pare-Pare City at 9.88% (yoy), followed by Sintang at 8.55% (yoy), Pangkal Pinang City at 8.22% (yoy), and Singkawang City at 8% (yoy).

Padangsidempuan City also experienced food inflation of 7.86% (yoy). This was followed by Palopo City at 7.47% (yoy), Luwuk at 7.04% (yoy), and Tangerang City and Merauke at 6.9% (yoy) and 6.89% (yoy) respectively.

Since 2018, BPS has conducted CPI surveys in 90 cities/regions spread across 34 provinces. Therefore, the CPI calculation uses the base year of 2018=100.
