Access to Jobs for People with Disabilities is Decreasing

People with disabilities are often perceived as having shortcomings. As a result, they often lack equal opportunities, including in employment.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that only 0.18% of the Indonesian population aged 15 and over with disabilities were employed in 2020. This figure decreased by 0.1 percentage points from the previous year, which was 0.28%.

By region, the percentage of disabled workers in urban areas decreased from 0.24% to 0.15%. In rural areas, the percentage of disabled workers decreased from 0.34% to 0.20%.

The majority, or 28.37%, of disabled workers are self-employed. 20.68% of disabled workers are employees. Furthermore, 19.79% of disabled workers work with the help of casual laborers.

Disabled workers who are self-employed in agriculture account for 5.36%. Disabled workers employing permanent/paid help account for 3.08%. Meanwhile, disabled workers who are self-employed in the non-agricultural sector reach 3.96%.

In the context of decent work, employment should be open to all who meet the requirements. This also applies to people with disabilities, who should have access to employment without discrimination.
