Top Economic Sectors Contributing to Government Debt in October 2021: What Are They?

Bank Indonesia released data on the government's external debt (ULN) totaling US$204.9 billion in October 2021. The administration, defense, and mandatory social security sectors were the largest contributors to this government ULN.

Government external debt from the administration, defense, and mandatory social security sectors reached US$36.68 billion. This amount is equivalent to 17.9% of the total government ULN in October 2021.

The second largest contributor came from the health services and social activities sector, reaching US$35.43 billion (17.3%). Then, the government's ULN in the education services sector was recorded at US$33.83 billion (16.5%).

Furthermore, the government's ULN in the construction sector was recorded at US$31.68 billion (15.46%). Following this was the financial and insurance services sector, which contributed US$24.58 billion (12%) to the government's ULN.

Other economic sectors contributing to the government's ULN in October 2021 were the transportation and warehousing sector at US$15.7 billion (7.6%), followed by the agriculture, livestock, forestry, and fisheries sector contributing US$11.56 billion (5.6%), and the water management, wastewater, waste recycling, and remediation activities sector at US$6.13 billion (3%).

Next, the electricity, gas, steam/hot water, and air supply sector contributed US$3.89 billion (1.9%) to government debt, and the information and communication sector contributed US$1.14 billion (0.55%).

The government's external debt (ULN) of US$204.9 billion in October 2021 decreased by 0.32% compared to the previous month (m-to-m). Meanwhile, the government's ULN in that period grew by 2.5% compared to the previous year (yoy).
