What is Public Opinion on the Merah Putih Village Cooperative? Here's the Survey

A survey by Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) showed that 42.1% of total respondents said they supported the Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperative Program. However, they were not interested in joining.

"This program receives support because, in principle, cooperatives are seen as a good idea, nationalistic, and based on mutual cooperation," wrote Litbang Kompas in its report, Monday (July 14, 2025).

Another 36.3% of respondents agreed and were interested in becoming members of the Merah Putih Cooperative. Meanwhile, 36.3% of respondents disagreed and were not interested in joining, and 2.9% answered “don’t know.”

According to Litbang Kompas, public approval that is not followed by a high level of interest in cooperative membership indicates passive support.

"This paradoxical view, expressed by four out of ten respondents, shows a mismatch between attitude and action—supporting the idea ideologically, but reluctant to be directly involved," wrote Litbang Kompas.

The survey involved 512 respondents from 72 cities in 38 provinces, selected randomly based on the population proportion of each province.

Data collection was conducted from June 16 to 19, 2025, through telephone interviews. The survey has a margin of error of around 4.25% and a confidence level of 95%, assuming simple random sampling.
