The Contribution of the Textile and Apparel Industry to GDP Decreased from 2010-2024

Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the contribution of the textile and ready-made garment industry to Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reached 1.4% in 2010. However, this contribution subsequently declined to 1.11% in 2017. From 2018 to 2019, the contribution of the textile and garment industry to GDP strengthened slightly, but it decreased again starting in 2020 with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, the industry's contribution has weakened, consistently remaining below 1% throughout 2023-2024.

Over the past decade, the growth rate of Indonesia's textile and garment industry has been fluctuating. Several years before the pandemic, the industry's growth had been strengthening. However, following the pandemic, this sector experienced mostly negative growth, as shown in the graph.

In 2024, the nominal GDP of the textile and ready-made garment industry reached Rp 218.2 trillion, contributing 0.99% to the national GDP. Based on constant prices, the industry's GDP grew by 4.26% year-on-year (yoy) in 2024 compared to the previous year.

The textile and garment industry faced further upheaval earlier this year when Indonesia's largest textile factory, PT Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk (Sritex), laid off 10,665 employees, coinciding with the company's closure on March 1, 2025.
