Solo Unemployment Rate Falls Under Gibran's Leadership, Returning to Pre-Pandemic Levels

Surakarta (Solo) Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka will resign from his position in July 2024.

This resignation is related to Gibran's upcoming inauguration as the elected vice president in October 2024, alongside the elected president Prabowo Subianto.

"Today, we submitted our resignation letter to the Chairman of the Surakarta City DPRD (Regional People's Representative Council), and it will be processed according to the existing mechanism," said Gibran, as reported by Antara news agency on Tuesday (16/7/2024).

"The [Solo] development this year can be continued by the Deputy Mayor, hopefully, it can continue to be sustainable in the future," he added.

Solo's Unemployment Rate During FX Hadi and Gibran's Eras

Before Gibran's tenure, the Mayor of Solo was FX Hadi Rudyatmo for two periods, namely 2012-2015 and 2016-2021.

In FX Hadi's first term, the open unemployment rate in Solo decreased from around 7% to 4%.

In FX Hadi's second term, the unemployment rate remained around 4%, then surged to almost 8% in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After Gibran Rakabuming Raka was inaugurated as Mayor in February 2021, Solo's unemployment rate began to decline along with the national and global economic recovery from the pandemic's impact.

By 2023, the unemployment rate in Solo had returned to around 4%, not much different from before the COVID-19 outbreak.
