President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has launched a state-owned enterprise (SOE) holding company in the defense sector called Defence Industry Indonesia (Defend ID).

Defend ID is a holding company formed from the merger of five SOEs, namely:

* PT LEN (Persero) as the parent company
* PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero)
* PT Pindad (Persero)
* PT PAL Indonesia (Persero)
* PT Dahana (Persero)

Of these five SOEs, PT Dirgantara Indonesia has the highest assets, while PT Dahana has the lowest, as shown in the graph.

“We must realize the independence of the defense industry together, we cannot do it alone, we cannot do it partially, we cannot. We must strengthen the industry, and we must also build its ecosystem so that it grows and develops further,” said President Jokowi at the launch of Defend ID at PT PAL Indonesia (Persero), Surabaya, as reported by the Indonesian Cabinet Secretariat website on Wednesday (20/4/2022).

In his remarks, the President emphasized that Indonesia must immediately build independence while promoting domestic defense to be fully prepared to enter a new era of competition, and be able to meet the basic defense needs to maintain the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

On this occasion, the President also reminded Defend ID to continue to encourage the growth of the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) and reduce imports of defense and security equipment (alpahankam).

"This state-owned defense industry will be the spearhead of Indonesia's defense industry independence," said Jokowi.

President Jokowi also emphasized the importance of mastering the latest technology and manufacturing of components based on dual-use technology, by building the widest possible global partnerships.
