Most Frequent Offenders in Corruption Cases

A total of 1,115 civil servants (PNS) have been implicated in corruption cases. This figure is based on court decisions handled by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) at the Supreme Court, High Courts, and District Courts.

Corruption has become ingrained in the culture and is considered commonplace by some segments of society. The lenient sentences handed down to corruptors have resulted in corruption cases continuing to occur everywhere. High-profile corruption arrests reported in the media have failed to deter perpetrators.

In 2016, former ministers, governors, lawyers, and even generals were found guilty of corruption. Former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Jero Wacik and former Minister of Religious Affairs Surya Dharma Ali were convicted of corruption. Former non-active Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho and prominent lawyer Otto Cornelis Kaligis were also found guilty. Six heads of factions in the Musi Banyu Asin Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) received prison sentences of 4 and 5 years. Brigadier General (TNI) Teddy Hernayadi, former Head of the Implementation of Financing at the Ministry of Defence (2010-2014), was sentenced to life imprisonment for causing significant losses to the state.
