President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) served as the inspector of the 77th anniversary ceremony of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) at the Merdeka Palace courtyard in Jakarta on Wednesday (5/10/2022).

This year's TNI anniversary carries the theme "TNI is Us". On this occasion, President Jokowi expressed his appreciation for the role and hard work of all TNI personnel.

"I express my deepest gratitude and appreciation to the extended TNI family who continue to uphold the nation's sovereignty, safeguard the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, and protect all of Indonesia," said the President in his official statement on the Setkab.go.id website.

To strengthen Indonesia's military, the government allocates a budget each year to modernize the TNI's main weapon systems (alutsista).

In the 2022 State Budget (APBN), the government allocated Rp133.41 trillion to the Ministry of Defense. The allocation for the modernization program of alutsista, non-alutsista, and defense infrastructure reached Rp45.59 trillion.

Then, in the 2023 State Budget (RAPBN), the Ministry of Defense's budget allocation is Rp131.93 trillion, with an allocation for the alutsista modernization program reaching Rp35.88 trillion.

As is known, Indonesia's current defense budget is not yet optimal due to government financial constraints. This is reflected in the Minimum Essential Force (MEF) which has only reached 62%.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused the TNI's MEF to decline in 2020 because a significant portion of the budget was allocated to handling the prevention of virus transmission. However, the TNI Commander targets the MEF to increase to 70% by 2024.
