According to a recent Populix survey, approximately 50% of Indonesian Muslim respondents allocate more than Rp1 million (approximately US$67) for Ramadan preparations. This is more common among those with higher socioeconomic classifications.
17% of respondents reported allocating a budget of Rp1 million to Rp1.5 million (approximately US$67 to US$100). Another 15% each allocated approximately Rp1.5 million to Rp2 million (approximately US$100 to US$133) and Rp2 million to Rp3 million (approximately US$133 to US$200) for Ramadan preparations.
Furthermore, 5% of respondents allocated a budget exceeding Rp3 million (approximately US$200).
Conversely, a smaller proportion of respondents prepared a budget of less than Rp1 million. This includes 10% allocating Rp300,000 (approximately US$20), 12% allocating Rp300,000 to Rp500,000 (approximately US$20 to US$33), 11% allocating Rp500,000 to Rp750,000 (approximately US$33 to US$50), and 14% allocating Rp750,000 to Rp1 million (approximately US$50 to US$67).
The Populix survey also revealed that 63% of respondents reported increased spending during Ramadan compared to other months. Conversely, 33% reported no change, while 4% reported decreased spending.
Populix suggests that the increased spending by Muslim Indonesians during Ramadan highlights the importance of household expenditure and the desire to ensure a joyful Holy Month.
This online survey, conducted from January 15-24, 2024, involved 998 Muslim respondents preparing for Ramadan out of a total of 1,022 Muslim respondents from a total of 1,165 respondents. The majority of respondents were from Java (80%), followed by Sumatra (13%), and other islands (8%).
Respondents were predominantly young people aged 17-25 (44%) and 26-35 (38%). Occupationally, most respondents were employees (55%), followed by students (16%) and entrepreneurs (15%).
