Indonesia Experiences 0.04% Deflation in September 2021

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia experienced deflation of 0.04% month-to-month (m-to-m) in September 2021, with a consumer price index (CPI) of 106.53. This is the first deflation in the last three months and the second time in 2021.

The deflation occurred due to a decrease in prices from several expenditure groups. Food, beverages, and tobacco recorded a deflation of 0.47%. The information, communication, and financial services expenditure group decreased by 0.01%.

Meanwhile, other expenditure groups experienced inflation. The clothing and footwear group recorded the highest inflation at 0.27%.

This was followed by the housing, water, electricity, and household fuel group, which experienced inflation of 0.08%. Then, the household equipment, tools, and routine maintenance group experienced inflation of 0.2%.

Inflation in the health group was 0.12%, transportation 0.07%, recreation, sports, and culture 0.11%. The education group experienced inflation of 0.1%, food and beverage services/restaurants 0.25%, and personal care and other services 0.04%.

The highest deflation occurred in Gorontalo, at 0.9% with a CPI of 105.94. Meanwhile, the highest inflation occurred in Pangkal Pinang, at 0.6% with a CPI of 104.98.

Indonesia's year-on-year (yoy) inflation rate was 1.6% in September 2021. The year-to-date (ytd) inflation rate was 0.8%.
