The Russian government launched a military invasion of eastern Ukraine on Thursday, February 24th. Since then, a series of explosions and missile strikes have occurred across Ukraine.
According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia's weapons production capacity is very strong, ranking 15th globally.
Ukraine's weapons production capacity, however, is significantly weaker, ranking 77th in the world.
In recent years, Ukraine has imported various types of weapons and military equipment from developed countries.
Based on SIPRI data, the largest exporter of weapons to Ukraine during the 2014-2020 period was the United States (US).
US-Ukraine Arms Exports Value
According to a US Department of Defense report published on the SIPRI website, the total value of US arms exports to Ukraine reached US$55.2 million in 2019.
The total price of weapons shipped that year amounted to US$50.67 million, plus approximately US$4.53 million in shipping costs.
Details of weapons and military equipment shipped from the US to Ukraine in 2019:
* Fire control equipment: 2,886 units, valued at US$20.8 million
* Ammunition/artillery: 60,274,788 units, valued at US$17.51 million
* Non/semi-automatic weapons: 6,721 units, valued at US$3.23 million
* Military electronic equipment: 350 units, valued at US$1.56 million
* Close-range weapons: 3,709 units, valued at US$1.46 million
* Heavy weapons: 1,000 units, valued at US$1.23 million
* Spare parts/accessories: 75,899 units, valued at US$844,000
* Ground combat vehicles: 102 units, valued at US$300,000
* Missiles/bombs/mines: 1,058 units, valued at US$91,000
* Aircraft components: 6 units, valued at US$750
* Military training equipment: 4 units, valued at US$250
* Other: 50 units, valued at US$5,000
