Public Trust in Police Decreases Following the Ferdy Sambo Case

A survey by the Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) Denny JA reveals a declining public trust in the police. This decline is particularly pronounced following the murder of Brigadier J, or Yosua, perpetrated by former Head of the Propam Division, Ferdy Sambo, and his associates.

Public trust in the Indonesian National Police (Polri) had reached 87.8% in 2018. However, this dropped to 72.1% after the 2019 Presidential Election and further decreased to 59.1% in the wake of the Ferdy Sambo case.

LSI Denny JA Director, Ardian Sopa, stated that the case resulting in Yosua's death was highly dramatic and became a major issue. Meanwhile, public trust in the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) remains higher, at 90.9%.

"The Ferdy Sambo case is like a drama filled with sensational issues and shifting narratives, ranging from a police shooting, adultery, obstruction of justice, a husband defending his wife, abuse of power, allegations of dark money from online gambling, and even narcotics," said Ardian, as reported by Katadata.co.id on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.

The survey, conducted from September 11-20, 2022, involved 1,200 respondents across 34 provinces. It employed a qualitative research methodology, including media analysis, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and in-depth interviews. Face-to-face interviews were conducted, with a margin of error (MoE) of approximately 2.9%.
