Data Check: Anies States 15 of 38 Provinces Lack Class A Hospitals; What's the Data Like?

Presidential candidate (Capres) number one, Anies Baswedan, stated that 15 out of 38 provinces in Indonesia lack a Class A hospital.

He made this statement during the fifth Presidential Election debate of 2024, themed "Social Welfare, Culture, Education, Information Technology, Health, Employment, Human Resources, and Inclusion," held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on Sunday, February 4th, 2024.

Responding to a question from presidential candidate number two, Prabowo Subianto, regarding the shortage of doctors in Indonesia, Anies highlighted the importance of healthcare infrastructure. Anies mentioned that to further improve the curative aspect, both soft and hard infrastructure need to be developed.

He explained that the soft infrastructure refers to medical personnel, such as doctors, repeatedly mentioned by Prabowo. "Secondly, hard infrastructure; what is that? For example, 15 out of 38 provinces still lack a Class A hospital; these need to be built," he said.

According to data from the Ministry of Health as of September 2023, Indonesia has a total of 69 Type A hospitals. When examining their provincial distribution, 16 out of 34 provinces (before the division of Papua and West Papua provinces) still lack a Type A hospital.

Provinces without a Type A hospital include Banten, Bangka Belitung Islands, Riau Islands, North Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua, and Southeast Sulawesi.

Provinces with the highest number of Type A hospitals are concentrated on Java Island: DKI Jakarta, Central Java, West Java, and East Java.
