April Retail Sales Grew 6.7%

Bank Indonesia (BI) survey shows that the Real Retail Sales Index (IPR) in Indonesian retail sales in April 2019 was recorded at 229.3, or grew by 6.7% compared to the previous period (yoy). This figure slowed compared to the previous month by 10.1% (mom), but was higher than the previous period (yoy) by 4.1%. This growth was influenced by a decline in all retail sales groups, except for spare parts and accessories which grew by 25.8% (yoy) and other household goods by 10.5% (yoy).

In May 2019, retail sales are estimated to have grown higher than in April 2019. Estimated retail sales in May 2019 grew by 9% (yoy) due to high demand during Ramadan (festive season). This increase was driven by increased retail sales for spare parts and accessories, and the clothing sub-group, which recorded growth of 30.6% and 26.9% (yoy) respectively. In addition, an increase in retail sales also occurred in the food, beverage, and tobacco group, which grew by 10.3% (yoy).
