The Institute for Demographic and Poverty Studies (IDEAS) projects that the economic potential of *qurban* (sacrificial animal) in Indonesia in 2024 could reach Rp28.2 trillion. This value is derived from 2.16 million *pekurban* (those who sacrifice animals) or *shahibul qurban*.
This projection is up from 2023, which was estimated at Rp24.5 trillion from 2.08 million *pekurban*. This means an increase of approximately 80,000 *pekurban* in 2024.
“Of the 2.16 million high-income Muslim families with the potential to become *shahibul qurban*, the greatest need for sacrificial animals is for goats and sheep, approximately 1.21 million head, while the need for cattle and buffalo is around 587,000 head,” said Tira Mutiara, a researcher at IDEAS, in a written statement on Saturday (08/06/2024).
Tiara assumes a weight of 20-80 kg for goats and sheep with a carcass weight of 41%. Meanwhile, the weight of cattle and buffalo is estimated between 250-750 kg with a carcass weight of 57%.
Therefore, she said, the economic potential of *qurban* in 2024 from approximately 1.79 million cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep is equivalent to 117,200 tons of meat.
Although generally increasing, Tiara still sees the potential for a decrease. Data shows that the number of Muslim people who potentially sacrifice goats and sheep weighing 20-40 kg per head decreased by about 7%, from 734,000 to 709,000.
"This group represents the middle class," Tira explained.
Many factors underlie the decrease in *qurban* contributions. Among them, Tiara cites layoffs (PHK) and high unemployment, causing the income of the lower-middle class to stagnate or even decline significantly.
Therefore, it is not impossible that people who were able to perform *qurban* in 2023 are now affected by this phenomenon and are no longer able to do so in 2024.
“Paradoxically, we found an increase in the number of those sacrificing cattle and buffalo weighing around 750 kg per head, which on average comes from the wealthiest segment of society, an increase of about 21%, from 63,900 to 77,600 *pekurban*,” said Tira.
Tira added that the phenomenon of a decrease in *pekurban* from the middle class and an increase from the wealthiest class confirms the increasingly extreme economic inequality in Indonesia.
