Rohingya Refugee Departure Trends Over the Past Year

Rohingya refugees relocate in search of asylum or refuge. This Muslim minority group, expelled from their native country, Myanmar, has spread to various countries in the Asian region.

Data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shows that the number of recorded Rohingya departures fluctuated throughout 2022-2023.

In Q1 2022, only 384 people were recorded. However, in Q4, the number skyrocketed to 2,327. Departures in the final quarter of 2022 were the highest in the past year.

In early 2023, the number of departures remained high at 1,051. Although the number decreased in Q2 and Q3 2023, departures surged again in Q4, reaching 1,607 according to the latest data from December 4, 2023.

Cumulatively, 3,705 departures were recorded in 2022. In 2023, up to early December, the number reached 3,412.

This UNHCR data, compiled from various sources, counts Rohingya refugees traveling by sea in Asia and the Pacific. These individuals, according to the UNHCR, are desperate and undertake dangerous journeys, primarily from Bangladesh and Myanmar.

UNHCR data shows that 1,094,198 Rohingya refugees and other stateless asylum seekers from Myanmar were recorded as of September 2023.

The largest number of Rohingya refugees are in Bangladesh, with 965,467 people, or 88.2% of the total Rohingya refugees and asylum seekers from Myanmar.

Malaysia is second, hosting 105,762 people (9.7%). India follows with 22,110 (2%).

Indonesia hosts the fewest Rohingya refugees, with 859 people (0.1%).
