On Monday, August 19, 2019, Papuan people staged a concentrated protest in Manokwari, West Papua. The demonstration was allegedly triggered by a racist incident involving Papuan students who were being taken to a police station in Surabaya, East Java. According to the 2015 Intercensal Population Survey (SUPAS), the population of West Papua was 963,600 in 2019. This comprised 457,200 women and 506,400 men.
The number of people of working age (15-64 years) was 656,000 (68%) of the total population. The population of non-working age (0-14 years) was 277,000, and the population of those who are no longer productive (over 65 years) was 31,000.
