Poverty in Jakarta at the End of Anies Baswedan's Term

The number of impoverished residents in Jakarta reached 502,040 in March 2022, representing 4.69% of the total population. This figure reflects Governor Anies Baswedan's achievement at the end of his term.

Anies served as Governor of Jakarta since 2017, with his term ending next month. However, during his five years in office, the number of impoverished residents in the capital reached its highest level, as shown in the graph.

The rise in poverty in Jakarta was triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in March 2020. Restrictions on social activities impacted the capital's economy, leading to numerous business closures and layoffs, thus increasing the number of impoverished residents.

At the start of his governorship in September 2017, the poverty rate in Jakarta stood at 3.78%. It then showed a downward trend, reaching its lowest point of 3.42% in September 2019, as seen in the graph.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the number of impoverished residents to increase to 496,840 (4.69% of the total population) in March 2020. This figure continued to rise to 4.72% in March 2021. The percentage then decreased as social restrictions were eased; however, the total number of impoverished residents still increased.
